Chapter 2 - Organisms In The Environment Flashcards
What does the iodine test, test for
Starch
What is a limiting factor
Anything that reduces the optimum rate of photosynthesis
What three things may the glucose produced by photosynthesis be used for
- respiration
- to produce proteins
- converted into insoluble starch for respiration
Why may nitrate ions be added to the soil
To ensure that plants can make the proteins needed for healthy growth
What physical factors may affect the distribution of organisms
- temperature
- availability of nutrients
- amount of light
- availability of water
- availability of oxygen
- availability of carbon dioxide
2 ways quantitative data can be obtained:
- Random sampling using a quadrat
* Sampling along a transact
What is a quadrat
A square frame placed randomly in a field to estimate the number of something, e.g plants
What is a transect
It is not random. A line is marked between two points. Quadrat can be placed every five metres along line. Gives information about habitat and organisms in it
How can you make an investigation valid
- Check results to make sure they are reproducible
* Have another person repeat investigation to make sure it’s reproducible
What is the equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
