Chapter 1 - Cells, Tissues And Organs Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
It controls the cell’s activities
What is the function of the cytoplasm
It is where many chemical reactions take place
What is the function of the cell membrane
It controls the movement of materials in and out of the cell
What is the function of the mitochondria
It is where energy is released during aerobic respiration
OR
it’s the site of respiration
What is the function of the ribosomes
It is where protein synthesis takes place
What does chloroplast contain and what do chloroplast do
Chloroplast contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis.
Chloroplasts absorb light energy to make food
What does a vacuole contain
Cell sap
Identify the structure of a bacterial cell
Bacterial cells have a cell membrane and a cell wall which surround cytoplasm
However they do not have a nucleus so genetic material is in the cytoplasm.
Identify the structure of a yeast cell
Yeast cells have a nucleus, cytoplasm and a membrane surrounded by a cell wall
What is diffusion
The spreading out of particles
What does the net movement into it out of cells depend on
The concentration of the particles on each side of the cell membrane
What will the net (overall) movement be
Of an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
What is the difference in concentration between two areas called
The concentration gradient
The larger the difference in concentration…
The faster the rate of diffusion
Examples of diffusion
- the diffusion of oxygen into cells of the body
- the diffusion of carbon dioxide into photosynthesising plant cells
- the diffusion of simple sugars and amino acids from the gut through cell membranes
What is a tissue
A group of cells with similar structures and functions
What are the functions of:
•muscle tissue
•glandular tissue
•epithelial tissue
~can contract to bring about movement
~produces substances such as enzymes or hormones
~covers some parts of the body
What do plant tissues include
Epidermal tissue-which covers the plant
Mesophyll-which can photosynthesise
Xylem and phloem-which transport substances around the plant
What is the function of the pancreas and salivary glands
To produce digestive juices
What is the function of the stomach
It is where digestion occurs
What is the function of the liver
It produces bile
What is the function of the small intestine
The absorption of soluble foods occurs
What is the function of the large intestine
Water is absorbed
What is the function of the pancreas and salivary glands
To produce digestive juices
