Bipolar disorder
Characterized by alternating manic and depressive episodes
What makes depression a major depressive disorder?
One or more episodes, with at least 5/9 symptoms lasting for at least 2 weeks
How does stress affect the gastrointestinal system?
Acid reflux, digestion issues
Phase 3 general adaption syndrome
Exhaustion: body can not keep up with demands of stress
What are manic episodes? What do they look like?
A period with abnormally elevated mood
Elevated mood or irritable, grandiose, racing thoughts, accelerated speech, may not sleep for days
Chronic stress
Long term, low level stress where the stress response continues without resolution
Stress
General state of the body, mind, and emotions when an environmental stressor has triggered the response
What is a mental disorder?
A pattern of behavior in an individual that is associated with distress or disability
What are mentally healthy people capable of doing?
Has the capacity to respond to challenges that allow continued growth
Ability to adapt
Able to deal with life changes without being impaired
What are the signs of depression?
Depressed mood, loss of interest in all or most activities, weight loss/appetite change, strange sleep patterns, agitated, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness
How does stress affect the cardiovascular system?
You are more likely to have clogged arteries and higher risk of strokes and heart attacks
What is fight or flight? What system controls it?
A series of psychological changes that activate body systems providing a burst of energy to deal with a perceived threat or danger controlled by the autonomic nervous system
Stressor
Events or agents in the environment that cause stress
General adaption syndrome
Model used to describe the physiological changes associated with the stress response
What is the relaxation response?
State of stability and balance, body functions are normal (homeostasis)
