Chapter 2 Foundations in chemistry Flashcards
What is an isotope?
atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different masses
What is a mass number?
The mass number of an element, is that elements total number of protons + neutrons
What is the definition of relative isotopic mass?
The mass of an isotope relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
What is the definition of relative atomic mass?
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
What information can be determined from using mass spectometry
- Percentage abundances of each isotope in the sample
- Relative isotopic mass of each isotope in the sample
What are the four main phases when using a mass spectrometer
1) Vaproise
2) Ionise
3) Accelerate
4) Detect
What is a binary compound?
A compound that contains only two elements
What are polyatomic ions?
Ions that contain atoms of more than one element bonded together
What is the formulae and charge for a nitrate ion?
NO3, with a (-) charge
What is the formulae and charge for a sulphate ion?
SO4, with a (2-) charge
What is the formulae and charge for a carbonate ion?
CO3, with a (2+) charge
What is the formulae and charge for a hydroxide ion?
OH, with a (-) charge
What is the formulae and charge for an ammonium ion?
NH4, with a (+) charge
