Chapter 2 Energy from Plants Flashcards
What are parts of the plants?
- Stem: supports the plant and holds it up. Transports water throughout the plant.
- Leaves: produce food so the plant can survive in its environment.
Roots: anchor the plant to the ground. Absorb, or take in water and other nutrients underground.
What are flowers?
Flowers are the organs that make seeds in flowering plants

- Pistil: Produces egg cells
- Stamen: Makes tiny grains of pollen at their tips

What is the life cycle of a Plant?
1) Seed - tiny with a hard outer shell
2) Sprout- the beginning of the plant. The stem and leaves beginning to grow.
3) Mature Plant: The plant is larger now. Flowers stats to grow. Their color is a trait inherited from their parent plant.
4) Flower: the part of the plant in charge of reproduction. Flowers that are pollinated produce eggs that develop into seeds.
5) Fruit: grows around the seed. In time, the grit and seed separate front he parent plant. The new seeds begin to grow again and the cycle begins again.
How are seeds transported? 3 ways
- Water: some seeds get around by floating in water
- Wind: Seeds float in the wind to far distances.
- Animals: Some fruits are covered with hooks that attach to animals fur. They go where the animal goes. Some animals bury nuts and seeds.
Even though seeds can travel very far, most never grow into a new plant.
