Chapter 1 Classifying Living Things-Animals Flashcards
What does animal Adaptation mean?
Animal adaptations are what help protect animals.
Some animal adaptations help them avoid get eaten by predators.
For example: bright colors on animals may warn predators that the animal is poisonous.
some animals have adaptations that make it difficult for enemies to see them (color, shapes, patterns)
How do animals adapt?
- Animals inherit characteristics from their parents. These characteristics (physical features and behaviors) help them survive. For example:
- Birds adaptations are feathers, wings, the shape of their beak, and their feet.
- Mammals adaptations- thick coats of fur, fat or blubber, sharp claws and teeth.
What are animal instincts?
Animal instincts are behaviors that are inherited.
They help animals meet their needs.
Migration-traveling to warmer places to avoid starving.
Hibernation-inactivity in the winter to avoid starvation.
How are animals classified?
Animals are classified based on their similarities and differences. They are either:
vertebrates: have backbones. or
invertebrates: do not have backbones.
What are the 5 groups of vertebrates?
1) Fish: covered with scales, cold-blooded, breathe with gills, and mostly lay eggs.
2) Amphibians: smooth skin, go through metamorphosis (complete physical change0, breathe with gills as babies and lungs as adults, cold blooded, and lay eggs)
3) Reptiles: dry scales, breathe with lungs, cold-blooded, and lay eggs
4) Birds: covered in feathers, breathe with lungs, warm blooded, lay eggs.
5) Mammals: covered with hair or fur, breathe with lungs, warm-blooded, give birth to live young.
What are the 5 groups of invertebrates?
1) Arthropods: largest group of invertebrates, have an exoskeleton (bones are outside, shells), legs are jointed like crabs and shrimp.
2) Sponges
3) Sea Stars
4) Worms
5) Mollusks (like snails): they have a shell for protection.
