Chapter 2-DF7 Flashcards
Polymers and plastics
What is a polymer?
A long chain molecule made from lots of small molecules joined together in an addition reaction
What is a monomer?
Small molecules that join together to make polymers
What is addition polymerisation?
Formation of long chain molecules from lots of small molecules joining together with no other products
What is condensation polymerisation?
Formation of long chain molecules from lots of small molecules joining together with another small molecule produced as well
What are elastomers?
Polymers that are soft and springy, which
can be deformed and them go back to
their original shape,
What are plastics?
Polymers that are not so springy and when it is deformed it tends to stay out of shape, undergoing permanent or plastic deformation
What are fibers?
Stronger polymers, which do not deform
easily, are just what is needed for making
clothing materials, Some can be made into strong, thin threads which can then be woven together
What are addition polymers usually formed from?
Double carbon bonds
What bond does a repeating unit of polymer have? how many bonds are shown?
Single
5 bonds between atoms
