Chapter 2-DF3 Flashcards
What's in your tank?
What are the first 6 alkanes?
methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane and hexane
What is the molecular formula for an alkane?
CnH2n+2
What is the molecular formula?
The molecular formula shows the number of atoms of each element in the alkane
What is the structural formula?
The structural formula shows how the atoms are bonded together
What is the display formula?
The displayed formula shows all the atoms and all the bonds in the alkane
What is a methyl group?
A branch containing one carbon atom
What is a chain isomer?
The same molecular formula but different atomic arrangements, or branches
What are cycloalkanes?
When the carbons of the molecule are arranged in the form of a ring
How would you name a cycloalkane?
Use the alkane name but with cyclo- ant the beginning, for example cyclopropane
What is the formula for a cycloalkane?
CnH2n
What is the skeletal formula?
The simple line form of a molecule, where each point represents a carbon
What is an isomer?
Two or more compounds with the same formula but a different arrangement of atoms in the molecule and different properties
How do you name isomers?
Putting the number where the added group is first
What are haloalkanes?
These contain halogens –F (flouro)/Cl (chloro)/Br (bromo)/I (iodo)
Where do haloalkanes come when naming alkanes?
Before the alkane
