Data presented in a meaningful way. Must be accurate, timely, relevant, bare minimum, worth costs

Brings information together so that it is understood. Consists of activities, resources, facilities and information

- Manipulate and store data and information
- Manual actions and automated/controlled procedures used by computers
Dimensions of IS (3)
Management, organization and technology
Operational decisions
Day-to-day activities. ex: transaction processing system (TPS)
Managerial decisions
Allocation and utilization of resources. ex: how many engineers should we assign to a project? (management information system MIS)
Strategic decisions
Broader-scope and organizational issues. ex: should we start a new product line? (executive information system EIS)
Transaction processing system (TPS)
Low level management. Tracks everyday operations throughout every division or department
Management information system (MIS)
Mid level management. Requires information on a periodic basis, not a daily basis. Directing, planning, coordinating, communicating, and decision making
Decision-support systen (DSS)
High level management. Combines internal data with external data. Analyzes complex and interactive decisions (what-if scenarios).
Executive support system (ESS)
Unstructured. Information must be easily manipulated. Supplies complete answers to incomplete scenarios
Structured decision
There is a universal method to make decision. ex: how much tax do I pay?
Unstructured decision
No universal method to make decision. ex: predicting the future of the stock market
