Selective Perception
people’s selective interpretation of what they see based on their interests, background, experiences
Halo effect
drawing a general impression of an individual on the basis of a single characteristic
contrast effect
concept that our reaction to one person is often influenced by other people we have encountered
projection
attributing one owns characteristics on to other people.
Stereotyping
judging someone on the basis of ones perception of the group to which that person belongs.
Myer-Briggs Type Indicator
personality test that taps into 4 characteristics and classifies people into 1 of 16 personality types
Big five personality model
personality assessment model that taps into five basic dimensions: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness to experience.
Extraversion
describes the degree to which a person is sociable, talkative, and assertive.
Agreeableness
degree to which a person is good-nature, cooperative, and trusting.
Conscientiousness
measure of reliability. Responsible, organized, dependable, and persistent
Emotional stability
ability to handle stress.
Openness to experience
addresses a person’s range of interests and fascination with novelty.
Dark Triad
negative personality traits consisting of Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy.
Machiavellianism
degree to which an individual is pragmatic, maintains emotional distance, and believes that ends can justify means.
Narcissism
tendency to be arrogant, have a grandiose sense of self importance, excessive admiration, and have a sense of entitlement.
