The Self
Arise in communication with other. Ex: When interact, we know how people see us.
Particular Others: The first perspectives that affect us are those of particular others.Ex: are specific people who are significant to us like family member.
Direct Definition
is communication that tells us who we are by explicitly labelling us and our behaviour. Ex: black men video or saying “You are smart, strong”
Reflected- Appraisal
is another’s view of us that affects how we see our seft. Ex: finding nemo
Can be upper, downer or vulture
Attachment style: Secure
The most positive.
Ex: caregiver give positive way in taking care of child thus, the child develops a positive sense of self worth.
=> Tend to be out goling, affectionate, able to handle challege
Attachment style: Fearful
opposite with secure
=> Tend to be scare with relationship, may avoid others
Attachment style: dismissive
Positive view about themseft and low regard for others in relationship.
Ex: “I am comfortable without close emotional relationships. It is very important to me to feel independent and self-sufficient, and I prefer not to depend on others or have others depend on me.”
Attachment style: Anxious/ambivalent
Most complex style cause of caregiver unpredictable, some time positive, some time negative.
=> Tend to be preoccupied, inconsistent about themself, nervours
The Generalized Other
- Race (skin colour) and ethnicity
- Gender
- Sexual Orientation(gay, less)
- Socioeconomic Status (income, job)
- Social Comparision (We also use to measure out-selve and our abilities to another. Ex: Am I smart as Linh)
The Self Is Multidimensional
assumes physical, moral, and cognitive features
The development of the self is a process
it changes based on time and context
Ego boundaries
A clear recognized separation between ourselves, others, and our environment
Self-Concept
A sense of self, our features, our abilities, and our potential
Improving self-concept
- Make a firm commitment to personal Growth
- Gain and use knowledge to support
- Set goals that are realistic and fair
- Seek contexts that support personal growth
Improving seft-concept: Gain and use knowledge to support => Self- Disclosure
Revealing information about ourself that others are unlikely to discover on their own
Self- Disclosure: Open area
All informations are known by us and others.
=> Most comfortable, share good communication and cooperation.
