Q
  • assess bhx, define
  • Why it is occurring
  • Identify the cause: that’s when you can develop treatment plan
  • Evaluate the treatment plan

Q
  • face to face, to the person himself
  • By who: self, and individual within the client’s bhx
  • How: direct observation or recording or analogue
  • More accurate, more objective
  • Could be pricey
A

Direct

3
Q
  • asking people around, surveys, questionnaires
  • Could actually happen with the person exhibiting the bhx via surveys and the like
  • We cant rely on it because memory is faulty, and people sometimes lie, prone to a lot of bias
A

Indirect

Q

Characteristics of a good operational definition
• You need a good observation
• Has to be an action
• Measureable (count latency, how many time the bhx occur)

  • Feelings cant be observable (upset, sad, happy)
  • Exclude intent and subjectivity
  • Labels include studying, tantrumming, and nail-biting, stuttering

Q

• Two considerations:
• What exactly are you gonna measure?
Dimensions:
Frequency
Duration
Intensity
Latency
Hole
• Type of measurement recording
• Continuous recording - measure every instance of the bhx during the whole duration
• Interval recording - take that 1 hr and break it down to smaller units
• Partial interval - mark if bhx occurred in any part of the interval
• Whole interval - mark if bhx occurred the entire interval
• Time sample - we still have intervals but we’re only measuring bhx during a specific event; only record it a specific time
• Momentary time sampling (MTS): bhx scored at the end of the interval

Other kinds of measurement:
• Percentage of opportunities
• Permanent product

Interobserver Agreement (for reliability)
• Calibrating people judgments
• Helps identify observer drift
• When cleaning: When you start up being strict at first, 6 months later not that strict about things
• Research at least 1/3 of session

IOA: Event recording
•	Frequency
Lower number/ higher number x 100
•	Duration
Shorter duration/ longer duration x 100
•	Interval and trial by trial
# of agreements / (# agreements + # disagreements) x 100

Q

• Whatever works for you!’

Precautions!
• Beware of reactivity - people change when they are being watched
• Good subject effect or malingering (faking bad)
