Chapter 1 Flashcards
get our knowledge through observation
Empirical
how many
frequency
free of bias, personal lies
Objective
a stimulus that vary in value, measurable characteristic, a testing condition that does not have one constant value
Variable
what the experimenter is manipulating to determine its effect
IV
what the experimenter is observing; the one that changes
DV
characteristics of a particular subject (eye color, height, weight)
Subject variable
when we have a value of one variable that is co varying with IV, and thus, there is two things going on at the same time
• an extraneous variable (a variable that is not a focus of the study) that is statistically related to (or correlated with) the independent variable. This means that as the independent variable changes, the confounding variable changes along with it.
• THREATENS INTERNAL VALIDITY (how well an experiment is done; whether it avoids confounding)
Confound
how many
Frequency
frequency/time
Rate
how long a response occurs for
Duration
how much/forceful
Intensity
how long until a response occurs (e.g.: reaction time)
Latency
form of the behavior
e.g.: Words v.s. words
