Explain the Biological Paradigm
Causes: neurotransmitters, hormones, genetics, evolution, diseases/injuries.
Treatments: biological treatments like drugs, surgery, shock, brain stimulater, magnetic stimulation, etc.
Explain the Behavioral Paradigm
Believed that behaviors could be manipulated to become “normal”
Examples include Classical Conditioning (Pavlov), Operant/Instrumental Conditioning (Positive and Negative Reinforcement) and Modeling/Observational Learning (Bobo doll)
Explain the Cognitive Paradigm
Thoughts and beliefs influence behavior and feelings

- Beliefs
- Consequences
Explain the Family Systems Paradigm
Family dynamics impact mental illness. Better family dynamics, better the illness. Treatment: Family/Couples therapy
Explain the Sociocultural Paradigm
Social forces contribute to problems through learning. Treatment: Community interventions, social changes (reducing poverty, and discrimination, etc.)
Explain the Biopsychosocial Paradigm
The integration of elements of all the other paradigms.
