Police Psychology
What is the role of forensic psychologists in policing
Forensic psychologists can assist in responding to major complaints against police such as corruption, racism, and brutality. They can help in evaluating changes in police procedures and help in assigning police officers to specific neighbourhoods
What do higher levels of police corruption include
Violent crimes, denying civil rights, criminal enterprise, major bribes, property crime
What do lower levels of police corruption include
Role malfeasance, being ‘above’ laws, minor bribes, playing favourites, gratuities
Why do we need to match police to demographics of a community
Having police officers that match demographics of a community helps to raise communication between police and civilians
How do we select the police force
There are differences across every group / culture to the appropriate KSA’s should include
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

What are the two stages of the selection process
- Job analysis
- Construction and validation stage

- Defining KSA’s
- Skills determined through surveys, observational techniques or by talking to officers
Construction and Validation Stage
- Develop an instrument for measuring KSA’s
- Measures include tardiness, complaints, commendations, exam scores, and peer reviews

Composition, Comprehension, Memory, Judgement, Observation, Logic, and Computation

Combination of Pd (psychopathic deviate), Ma (hypomania), and L scales (social desirability) make up immaturity index and predict termination
Inwald Personality Inventory
This is used to identify police applicants who are most suitable for police work by measuring personality attributes and behaviour patterns
