Chapter 2 Flashcards
Chemical Reactions Make and Break Chemical Bonds
What are elements?
Can not be broken down into anything else
What are compounds?
Combinations of 2 or more elements
What are the four most common elements in living organisms?
C, H, O, N (96% of living matter)
What are the next 4 most common elements? (trace elements)
Ca, P, K, S (Na listed too)
What are trace elements?
Required in much smaller amounts
What is the structure of atoms?
protons and neutrons are in the nucleus; electrons are in a cloud surrounding the nucleus
Protons have what charge?
Positive
Electrons have what charge?
Negative
Neutrons have what charge?
None, they’re neutral
What’s the mass number of an element?
of protons + # of neutrons
What’s the atomic number of an element?
The number of protons
of protons is equal to?
of electrons
What do protons do?
Identify the element
What do electrons do?
responsible for chemical properties, energy levels, and ability to make chemical bonds
What are isotopes?
The same number of protons in an element, but different # of neutrons
