A

Intuitive thinking: First impressions are at times surprisingly accurate: quick and reflexive, that doesn’t require much mental effort

A

Random selection: The Key to Generalizability
Identify a representative sample of the population and administer a survey

  • Every person in the population has an equal chance of being chosen to participate
  • Crucial if we want to generalize our results to broader population
  • Obtaining a small sample tends to be more accurate

What are the two main factors that determine our evaluating measures?

A

Evaluating measures: when we measure our dependent variable we need to ask whether if the measure is reliable and valid

Reliability: consistency of measurements
Reliable questionnaire should yield similar scores over time (test-reterst reliability)
- Interrater reliability: extent to which different people who conduct an interview agree on the characteristics they’re measuring (diagnosis of schizophrenia while the other diagnoses depression - non reliable)

Validity: extent to which a measure assesses what it claims to measure

A

→ Reliability is necessary for validity (we need to measure something consistently, before we can measure it well) , but reliability doesn’t guarantee validity

What is the difference between replicability and reproducibility?

A

Replicability: ability to duplicate the original findings consistently
Reproducability: ability to review and reanalyze the data from a study and find exactly the same results (repeating the same statistical analysis of already collected data)

How do we face the replicability crisis? (hint:5)

  1. Share research materials and datasets in publicly accessible research archives, inviting others to reanalyze their data
  2. Conduct replication replications of their own and others’ work
  3. Preregistration, publicly posting hypotheses, research designs, and plans for analyzing reporting results prior to data collection
  4. Encourage editors to publish all research that’s been carefully conducted, regardless of whether it supports a theory
  5. Place less emphasis on findings of single studies

A

Correlate: 2 things relate to each other (statistically)

A

Positive: as the value of one variable changes, the other does as well (up:up or down:down)
Zero: variables don’t go together at all; one variable changes, the other won’t
Negative: as the value of one variable changes, the other goes in the opposite direction (up:down or down:up)

What are the correlation coefficients in a correlational design?

A

-1: negative correlation (perfect, all dots (individuals of the study) align with the slope)
+1: positive correlation (not perfect, some individuals don’t follow the trend)
<1: less-than-perfect correlation coefficient (to find out how strong a correlation coefficient is, we need to look at the absolute value)
The strength of the correlation (how close the absolute value is to 1) tells us how effectively one variable predicts the other

What is an illusory correlation?

A

Illusory correlation: perception of a statistical association between 2 variables where none exists

Regardless…
→ We tend to pay too much attention to the first → fits what we expect to see = confirmation bias kicks in + we tend to remember instances that are most dramatic (come easily to mind)
We aren’t good at remembering nonevents

What are the components of an experimental design?
What are the 2 designs that an experimental design can adopt?

A

Experimenter randomly sorts participants into one of two groups (canceling out pre-existing differences)

  1. Between-subjects design: one group will be randomly assigned to receive some level of the independent variable, while another will be assigned to the control condition
  2. Within-subject design: researcher takes a measurement before the independent variable manipulation and measure the same participant after the variable manipulation

Experimental group: group that receives manipulation (take new drug)

A

Random selection deals with how we initially choose our participants, whereas random assignment is how we assign our participants after we’ve already chosen them

A

Independent variable: variable the experimenter manipulates
Dependent variable: variable the experimenter measures to see whether the manipulation has had an effect

What is a placebo effect?

A

Improvement resulting from the expectation of improvement (patients may improve since they knew they were receiving treatment)

3 neurotransmitter systems involved in the placebo effect: cannabinoids, dopamine, and opioids

A

Harm resulting from expectation of harm

What is the experimenter expectancy effect?

A

Researchers’ hypotheses leads them to unintentionally bias the outcome of a study (researchers’ end up falling pray to confirmation bias by seeming to find evidence for their hypotheses even when this is wrong)

→ Corrected by adopting a double-blind (neither the researcher nor participants know who’s in the experimental or control group)
→ People can (without knowing) give off cues that affect a subject’s behaviours ( math horse and bright rat example)

What are demand characteristics?

A

Participants can pick up cues from an experiment that allows them to generate guesses regarding the experimenter’s hypotheses

→ When participants think they know how the experimenter wants them to act, they may alter their behaviour accordingly
→ Corrected by researchers disguising the purposes of the study (cover story) that differs from the investigator’s actual purpose - distractor tasks or filler items

What is a confound?

A

Any variable other than the IV that differed between the experimental and control groups

→ In order for an experiment to possess internal validity, the independent variable must be the only difference between the experimental and control groups (otherwise we can’t know if the IV exerted an effect on the DV)

When is deception justified?

A

Deception is justified only when:
- Researchers couldn’t have performed the study without the deception
- The use of deception or withholding the hypothesis does not negatively affect the rights of the participant
- The research does not involve medical or therapeutic intervention

What is the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics?

A

Descriptive statistics: describe data (What is the average level of extraversion in the sample? How much do all participants, as well as men and women separately vary in how extroverted they are?)

Inferential statistics: how confident we are in that we can generalize findings from our sample to the full population (Can we draw inferences regarding whether the differences observed in our sample apply to similar samples)

Central score in dataset (where the group tends to cluster)
→ 3 measures: mean, median, and mode

A

Mean: average → total score divided by the number of people

A

Median: middle score in our dataset → order data from lowest to highest and then find the value in the middle

A

Mode: most frequent score in dataset

When is best to use the mean to report data from and when is it best to use the median/mode?

A

→ Mean is generally best statistic to report when data forms a bell-shaped (normal) distribution
→ When distribution is tilted to one side the mean provides misleading central tendency; therefore, we should use the median or mode instead

What does variability refer to? What are the 2 main measurements for this?

A

Variability: dispersion; gives a sense of how loosely or tightly bunched the data is
→ Range and standard deviation

What is a range?

A

Range: difference between the highest and lowest score) → even though 2 datasets may have the similar central tendency, their variability may differ (looks how scattered the most extreme scores are)

However, this may be a little deceptive since 2 datasets may have the same range, but their distribution of data may be different

What is standard deviation?

A

Standard deviation: correct distribution within a range; average amount that an individual data point differs from the mean (takes into account how far each data point is from the mean)

What is the difference between statistical and practical significance?

A

Statistical significance: make sure that an outcome in a test sample reflect a reliable pattern in the general population and it was not due to chance → 0.05

Practical significance: real-world importance (a finding can be statistically significant, yet not make much difference in the real world)
→ Although we can draw inferences about trends and patters within large groups of individuals, we can’t draw specific conclusions about any particular individual

What does it mean that the p value is less than 0.005?

A

→ When less than 5 in 100, we say it’s statistical significant ; when the finding would have occurred by chance ( p value)

What is a meta-analysis?

A

Meta-analysis: analysis of a set of studies on a particular topic that statistically evaluates the strength of patterns across different studies

What do peer reviewers play a role in quality control?

A
  1. Psychological journals send submitted articles to outside reviewers (experts on the field)
  2. Reviewers screen the articles carefully for quality control to identify flaws that could undermine findings and conclusions

What are 3 key signs to evaluate the accuracy of a psychological report?

A
  1. Consider the source: place more confidence in a finding on a science magazine, rather than those in other popular magazines (more trust in findings from primary sources, than from secondary sources)
  2. Keep an eye on “sharpening” and “leveling”

Sharpening: tendency to exaggerate the central message of a study
Leveling: tendency to minimize the less central details of a study

  1. One can be misled by “balanced” coverage story
  • Difference between genuine scientific controversy and the balanced coverage where 2 experts are placed on opposing sides of an issue to make seem the story to seem balanced
  • Pseudosymmetry: appearance of scientific controversy where none exists (no scientific evidence, only criticism)
