Chapter #2 Flashcards
Define cation.
An atom having more protons than electrons has a positive charge.
What does atomic mass consist of?
protons and neutrons
Define isotopes
Atoms that have different number of neutrons
what is the energy level of K shell?
K is the lowest
what is the energy level of L shell?
the level above K
What is the energy level for M shell?
the level above L
What is the energy level for N
The level N is the highest level
What are valence electrons?
The different chemical properties of elements.
what is the octet rule?
Other wise noun as the 8 rule, the octet rule is atoms that tend to establish completely full outer energy levels.
Define covalent bonds
sharing of electrons
Define ionic bonds
Attraction to opposite bonds
Define hydrogen bonds
sharing of H atoms
Hydrophobic bonds
forcing of hydrophobic portions of molecules together in presence of polar substances
Van der Waals attraction
weak attractions between atoms due to oppositely polarized electron clouds
Define electronegativity
Atoms that differ in their affinity for electrons.
What does a catalyst do?
a substance that increases the rate of a reaction.
cohesion
Hydrogen bonds hold water molecules together.
high specific heat
hydrogen bonds absorbed heat when they break and release heat when they form , minimizing temperature changes.
high heat of evaporation
many hydrogen bonds must be broken for water to evaporate
Lower density of ice
water molecules in an ice crystal are spaced relatively for apart because of hydrogen bonding.
hydrophobic
tending to repel or fail to mix with water.
hydrophilic
having a tendency to mix with, dissolve in, or be wetted by water.
hydrophobic exclusion
the tendency of the multiple oil droplets that are present in water to coalesce into fewer and larger droplets
buffer
an organic substance that has a neutralizing effect on hydrogen ions
base
a substance that can accept hydrogen ions in water and can neutralize an acid
acid
any hydrogen-containing substance that is capable of donating a proton (hydrogen ion) to another substance.
