Chapter 19 - Metabolism Flashcards
What is the definition for 1 calorie?
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one cubic centimeter of water from 14.5 to 15.5 Celsius
What are 2 ways to measure the body’s metabolic rate?
- Amount of heat generated by the body
- Oxygen consumed by the boyd per minute
What is the “basal metabolic rate (BMR)” and what factors determine a persons BMR?
- The metabolic rate (measure by rate of oxygen consumption) of an awak, relaxed person 12 to 14 hours after a meal and ata. comfortable temperature
- Determined primarily by person’s age, sec, and body surface. Strongly influenced by level of Thyroid hormone secretion
What is the formula for the Respiratory Quotient (RQ)?
VCO2 produced/ VO2 consumed
What is the Respiratory Exchange Ratio?
- It is another method to determine metabolic rate by measuring gases at the mouth instead of the partial pressures from the blood.
- If the RQ rises above 1.0 can you use it in predicitng the % of fuel consumed (either CHO or fats?)
- Why?
- No.
- Body would become acidotic - CNS tries to fix it thorugh hyperventilation
- Your CO2 levels would be artifically high…throwing off you RQ number.
- Same thing happens when buffering…CO2 levels are artifically increased throwing off the RQ number.
Fill in the blank -
Direct calorimetry measures [] produced
Indirect calorimetry measures [] consumed
- Heat
- O2
Is our metabolic rate dependent more upon body weight or body size?
- Body Size
What is the absolute low of body fat % for males and females?
- Males - 3%
- Female - 12%
What has the higher metabolic rate - exercising muscle or liver?
- Exercising muscle
- However, the liver does have a high metabolic rate. It is higher than resting muscle.
Does CCK levels fall or rise during/after a meal?
- CCK levels rise during and oimmediately after a meal and suppresses hunger (promotes satiety.
What is the metabolic lipophatic theory?
Increase in adipose tissue = > Increase release of leptin ==> decreases apetite
What happens to diastolic pressure during exercise?
It should remain unchanged or even go down.
