chapter 19 Flashcards
homogeneous equilibrium
contains equilibrium species that all have the same state or phase
heterogeneous equilibrium
contains species that have different states or phases
mole fraction
the mole fraction of a gas is the same as its proportion by volume to the total volume of gases in the gas mixture
x(A)= number of moles of A/ total number of moles in gas mixture
partial pressure
the partial pressure p of a gas is the contribution a gas makes towards the total pressure
p(A)= x(A) x P
Kp
H2 + I2 –> 2HI
kp= p(HI)2/p(H2)xp(I2)
do equilibrium constants change?
at a set temp, K is constant and does not change despite any modifications to conc, pressure or presence of a catalyst
- k does change if the temp is changed
effect of temp on K- exothermic reactions
- eq constant decreases w/ increasing temp
- raising temp decreases eq yield of the products
effect of temp on k- endothermic reactions
- eq constant increases w/ increasing temp
- raising the temp increases eq yield of products
