Chapter 18: Pharmacology Flashcards
Name the 5 medications carried on an ambulance.
Aspirin, Oral Glucose, Oxygen, Activated Charcoal, Naloxone.
What is the purpose of Aspirin?
Constricts blood platelets so that blood can flow easier. Helping with Heart Attacks.
Dose of Aspirin
81 mg per tablet
Adult dose is 4 tablets (324 mg)
Purpose of Oral Glucose
Used for low blood sugar.
When do you distribute oxygen to a patient?
Whenever you feel it’s needed.
Proper dose of oxygen?
It may vary depending on the situation.
Below 95 is a good point to distribute.
Purpose of Activated Charcoal
Postpones absorption of an overdosed drug.
Proper dose of Activated Charcoal?
15 g
Purpose of distributing Naloxone?
Opioid specific OD
Doesn’t work if a patient has not taken a narcotic.
Why do we coach patients using an inhaler?
Help them control breathing because they will be panicked.
Why? Doing this helps the medication get deep enough into the lungs to do its job.
What and why is a spacer helpful?
A spacer is a plastic tool that pumps in the inhaler from one end while allowing the patient to breathe normally while not allowing them to puff it back out into the air.
List 2 side effects of an inhaler.
Increased heart rate.
Patient jitteriness.
List the 3 prescribed medications most commonly seen.
- Inhaler
- Nitroglycerin
- Epinephrine
The main purpose of nitroglycerin?
Opens things up by dilating the blood vessels, allowing for easier blood flow.
Main side effect of nitroglycerin.
Drop in blood pressure.
