Petite Mal seizure
- aka absent seizure
- sudden loss of consciousness for 10 seconds
- appears to day dreaming
- common in children ages 5-15
Grand Mal seizure
- major motor convulsion
- loss of consciousness and may fall
- tonic phase:body becomes rigid and extends
- clonic phase: involuntary movements of body with salvation, incontinence
- postictal phase:deep sleep for hours, confusion
Myoclonic seizure
- minor motor seizure-sudden the contraction of face/upper extremities
- no loss of consciousness
Febrile convulsions
Usually ages 6 months-6 years
-with high fever may have seizures lasting longer than 10 minutes
Assessing mental status
Includes the following:
- level of consciousness
- speech
- orientation
- knowledge of current events
- judgement (what would you do if…)
- abstraction ( interpret colloquialism)
- memory
- emotional response
- vocabulary
- calculation
- object recognition
- praxis
CNS II
Optic nerve-ends at retina
-visual acuity and optic discs
CNS III
Oculomotor nerve
- controls eye movements
- controls pupil constriction and accommodations
CNS IV
Trochlear nerves
-superior oblique muscles of eye
CNS V
Trigeminal nerves: optic, maxillary, mandibular
-test corneal reflex, sensory, motor (clench jaw)
CNS VI
Abducens
Lateral eye movements
CNS VII
Facial nerves
Test motor by smiling, puff up cheeks, raise eyebrows (looking for symmetry)
Common disorders
Headaches Seizures Loss of consciousness Numbness/weakness Visual disturbance Dementia Gait disturbance Tremors Pain
CNS VIII
vestibulococholear-hearing, balance, auditory testing
CNS XI
glossopharyngeal-test: gag reflex, say “ahhhh”
CNS X
Vagus-same test as xi
