Chapter 18 Equilibrium Flashcards
Type of equilibrium that has everything present in the same phase
Homogenous equilibrium
A point in a reaction in which the rate of the forward reaction is the same as the rate of the reverse reaction
Equilibrium
Type of reaction that has substances present in more than one phase
Heterogenous equilibrium
What three factors can affect an equilibrium reaction
Temperature
Pressure
Concentration
What is indicated if the enthalpy change for the reaction is negative
Reaction is exothermic
What happens
If the enthalpy change for the reaction is a positive number
The reaction is endothermic
What happens when the temperature is increased for an endothermic reaction
Shift to the right
What happens if the temperature is increased for an exothermic reaction
Shift to left
What does pressure only affect
Reactions involving gases
What would an increase in pressure cause if the number of moles of gas was greater for the reactants
Shift right to low pressure side
What happens if a substance becomes more concentrated in a reaction
Shifts to reduce concentration
Speeds up both forward and reverse reactions but doesn’t change the position of the equilibrium
Catalyst
What happens if you add a substance
Causes equilibrium to shift away from the side where the substance was added
What happens when you remove a substance
Causes equilibrium to shift to the side where the substance was removed
Increase temp
Causes equilibrium of endothermic reaction to shift to the right
Causes equilibrium of exothermic reaction to shift to the left
