Chapter 18 Flashcards
Where do most clavicle fractures occur?
middle third
Name 3 shoulder bones
clavicle, scapula, humerus
What are the four muscles that makeup the rotator cuff?
Supraspinatus
Infraspinatus
Teres minor
Subscapularis
What cause, sign, and care for an AC sprain?
Cause: direct blow, upward force on humerus, fall on outstretched arm
Sign: Grade 1 - point tenderness, pain w/ moving
Grade 2 - tear/rupture of AC ligament, particle displacement of lateral end of clavicle, pain, point tenderness, decreased ROM
Care: Ice, stabilization, 3-4 days to 2 weeks immobilization, progressive aggressive rehab
What is the cause, sign, and care for a shoulder (glenohumeral) dislocation?
What is the mechanism of injury?
Cause: head of humerus is forced out of joint, anterior force, forced abduction, extension and external rotation
Sign: flattened deltoid, prominent humeral head in axilla, arm carried in abduction and external rotation, moderate pain and disability
Care: RICE, immobilization and reduction by physician, muscle re-conditioning, sling 1 week, resistance exercises
- inferior due to anterior force
What are the cause, sign, and care for a rotator cuff strain?
Cause: supraspinatus or rupture of other tendons, acute trauma, overtime
Sign: pain w/ muscle contraction, tenderness on palp. loss of strength due to pain, loss of function, swelling, tear = positive tests
Care: RICE, progressive strengthening, reduce frequency and level of activity
What is the cause, sign, and care or a SC sprain?
Cause: indirect force, blunt trauma
Sign: Grade 1 - pain and slight disability
Grade 2 - pain, subluxation w/ deformity, swelling, decreased ROM,
Care: PRICE, immobilization 3-5 weeks, graded conditioning
Explain how to do, what injury, and positive signs of the apprehension test?
- athlete sitting/lying down, arm abducted 90 degrees,n elbow 90 degrees, support elbow and GH joint, and externally rotate arm
-Anterior glenohumeral instability - present apprehension in face and unwillingness, afraid to continue
