Chapter 17 Flashcards
What are the cause, sign, and care for a femoral stress fx? And what is a common reason for this(medical term & define)
Cause: overuse, females who are amenorrheic
Sign: persistent pain in thigh, x-ray or bone scan to detect fx, commonly in femoral neck
Care: Analgesics, NSAIDs, RICE, ROM & PRE exercises, limited weight bearing
-Amenorrheic: loss of period
-low body fat around organs
Name the three parts of the pelvic girdle
- ilium
- ischium
- pubis
What are the cause, sign, and care for osteitis pubis?
Cause: distance runners and pregnant women, repetitive stress on pubis symphysis
Signs: chronic pain & inflammation of groin, point tenderness on public tubercle, ain w/ running, situps, and squats.
Care: Rest, NSAIDs, gradual return to activity
What are the cause, sign, and care for a quad contusion?
Cause: constantly exposed or deep traumatic blows
SIgn: pain, transitory loss of function, bleeding of muscles
Care: RICE - ice in flexed position, NSAIDs, crutches, heat, massage after initial care, padding
What are the cause, sign, and care for a hamstring strain?
Cause: easy to overstretch, fatigue, posture, lack of flexibility
Sign: Muscle belly/ point pain, capillary hemorrhage, pain, loss of function
Care: RICE, restrict activity, avoid ballistic stretching and explosive sprinting
What are the cause, sign, and care for a quad strain?
Cause: sudden stretch when stlete falls on bent knee or sudden contraction
Sign: peripheral tear, pain, point tenderness, little disability, loss of function
Care: RICE for internal bleeding, neoprene sleeve
What are the cause, sign, and care for myositis osifficans?
Cause: formation of ectopic bone following repeated blunt trauma
Sign: calcium deposit, pain, swelling, decreased ROM, tissue tension
Care: conservation, surgical removal after 1 year to prevent it from coming back
What are the cause, sign, and care fro a dislocated hip?
Cause: traumatic force directed along long axis of femur
Sign:flexed, abducted, and internally rotated hip, serious pathology, displaced femoral head (posteriorly)
Care: Immediate care: 2 weeks immobilization and crutches for 1 month
What is the name of the muscle on the anterior part of the thigh that does knee extension and hip flexion?
Rectus Femoris
Name and describe 2 ways to prevent a thigh injury
Strengthening: endurance, extensibility, abs
Stretching: ROM, muscle preparation
What are the cause, sign, and care for groin injuries?
Cause: poor strength/flexibility (running, jumping, external hip rotation)
Sign: twinge or tearing (sudden), pain, weakness, internal hemorrhaging
Care: RICE, NSAIDs, restore ROM and strength, analgesia for 49-72 hrs
What are the cause, sign, and care for a hip pointer?
Cause: contusion of iliac crest or abdominal musculature, direct blow
Sign: pain, spasm, transitory paralysis of soft structures, decreased ROM
Care: RICE 48 hr, NSAIDs, bed rest for 1-2 days, x-ray
What are the cause, sign, and care for an acute fracture of the pelvis?
Cause: direct blow, blunt trauma
Sign: severe pain, loss of function, shock
Sign: Immediate care for shock, medical emergency, possible internal injury
