Principles of Karma Yoga
3 options of performing actions
- Katum - to do
- Akartum - to not do
- Anyadhakartum - to do it differently
karmaṇy-evādhikāras te mā phaleṣhu kadāchana
mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo ’stvakarmaṇi ||2.47||
You can perform the action, but you cannot influence the result. The unseen factors is Ishwara, or your past karma.
yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā dhanañjaya
siddhy-asiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṁ yoga uchyate||2.48||
If we cannot influence result then how do you perform the action?
Perform actions without any attachment to the result - success or failure. You establish in Yoga.
buddhi-yukto jahātīha ubhe sukṛita-duṣhkṛite
tasmād yogāya yujyasva yogaḥ karmasu kauśhalam ||2.50||
Nature of action?
Perform your action in accordance of Dharma. Do your best. Attitude of performing action should be as an offering to God. And results should be accepted as blessings from God.
3 ways to perform action
- Perform action with Ishwara Arpana Bhawana
- Accept outcome of action with Prasad Bhawana
- Accept outcome with an attitude of equanimity
