Chapter 17 What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs? Edexcel 2BS01 Business Studies GCSE Unit 3.4

A

Abraham Maslow developed the theory known as the hierarchy of needs which describes five specific needs which aid motivation – physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, self-esteem needs, and self-actualisation needs. It places these needs in an order of importance, starting with basic (physiological) needs as the foundation. According to his theory once one need was satisfied it ceases to act as a motivator. A business can help a worker achieve these needs through various methods such as pay and opportunity. Sometimes one factor can help with more than one need, such as pay helping the physiological needs and the self-esteem needs.
