Chapter 17 Flashcards
Microbiology
Study of organisms too small to see
Subdivision of microbiology
Virology
Living and nonliving characteristics
Living:
•Contain DNA/RNA
•Protein
•Enzyme
Non-Living:
•Non-cellular
•Don’t breathe, respond to stimuli or grow
•Reproduce in living cells and are assembled in parts that join together
•Crystals
Bacteria Viruses
Bacteriophage
Plant Viruses
Tobacco Mosaic Virus
Animal Viruses
- Adenovirus (Cold)
- Herpes
- Small pox
- Measles
- HPV
- Epstein-Barr
- HIV, Ebola, Yellow Fever
- Hanta Virus
Size of Viruses
Micrometer and can pass through most filters.
Origin
- Non-cellular ancestors who are parasitic
- Fragments of other cells together
- Link that formed origin of all life on earth
Specifically of a Virus
Invades only a certain type of cell
CDC
Atlanta and Winnipeg Responsible for monitoring treatments/cure
3 Ways Viruses Can Spread
- Airbourne
- Vector - transmitted intermediately
- Vehical - transmitted through fluid contact
Defence Against Viruses
- Vaccines - Weak forms of the virus injected into white blood cells to make antibodies to attack and kill the virus.
- Phagocytes and Natural Killer Cell’s - Engulf virus before it has a chance to land.
- IF - Chemical produced by infected cells that warns virus
Death of Cell By Lysis
Death of host
Latent Infection
Chance for further infection
Cancer
Death
