Chapter 17 Flashcards
What are the primary taste sensations?
Sweet (in the front)
Salty (sides & front)
Sour (sides)
Bitter (back)
What is gustation?
Taste receptors that are clustered in taste buds. Taste buds are associated with epithelial projections on the dorsal surface of the tounge.
What are the 3 types of lingual papillae?
Filiform, fungiform, circumvallate
Taste Buds
each taste bud contains basal or stem cells and gustatory cells which extends taste hairs through taste pours.
Sense of Equilibrium
static equilibrium is concerned with maintaining stability of the head and body when motionless, vertigo. Dynamic equilibrium is concerned with balancing the head and body when they are moved or rotated suddenly
cornea
transparent part of the outer fibrous layer of the Eye
Iris
contains muscle fibers, change is the diameter of the pupil; The pupil is the opening in the center of the iris through which light enters
choroid
vascular layer that delivers oxygen and nutrients to the retina
neural tunic (retina)
outer layer = pigment
in your area = visual receptors and associated neurons
aqueous humor
fluid that circulates I, diffuses through walls of anterior chamber into the canal of schlemm & Then reenter circulation
other taste sensations
umami. is a characteristic of beef chicken broth and Parmesan cheese
rwater is detected by water receptors in the pharynx
sense of smell
odors stimulate receptors by entering the nasal cavity and gases dissolve in the watery fluid that surrounds cilia
sense of hearing
external ear collect soundwaves. The auditory ossicles of the middle ear conducts soundwaves from the tympanic membrane to the oval window. The organ of corti of the inner ear contains hearing receptors which are stimulated by vibrationsj
Lens
lies posterior to the cornea it focuses the visual image by changing shape
vitreous body
a gelatinous mass that helps stabilize the eye shape and support the retina
