Chapter 16 Vocabulary Flashcards
Magnet
Any material that attracts iron or materials containing iron.
Magnetic Pole
One of two points, such as the ends of a magnet, that have opposing magnetic qualities.
Magnetic Force
The force of attraction or repulsion generated by moving or spinning electric charges.
Magnetic Field
A region around a magnet in which magnetic forces act.
Ferromagnet
A magnet made of iron, nickel, cobalt, or mixtures of those metals; have strong magnetic properties.
Electromagnetism
The interaction between electricity and magnetism.
Solenoid
A coil of wire with an electric current in it.
Electromagnet
A coil that has a soft iron core and that acts as a magnet when an electric current is in the coil.
Electric Motor
A device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Armature
A loop or coil of wire that can rotate in electric motors; mounted between the poles of a permanent magnet or electromagnet.
Commutator
A ring that is attached to the armature to reverse the direction of the electric current in the wire.
Galvanometer
A device that measures current; consisting of a small electromagnet and needle on a pivot between the poles of a permanent magnet.
Electromagnetic Induction
The process of creating a current in a circuit by changing a magnetic field.
Electric Generator
A device that converts mechanical energy (fossil fuels, nuclear energy, etc.) into electrical energy.
Transformer
A device that increases or decreases the voltage of alternating current.
