- Indication: overdose or poisoning by pill, tablet, or capsule (to be administered within 1 hr of poison ingestion
- Action: binds and absorbs ingested toxins to be excreted afterward

- have suction ready and elevate head of bed
- assure patient is alert with stable vital signs and is not in danger of sedation or seizure

- blackening stool, nausea, vomiting, aspiration

- airway cannot be maintained
- unable to swallow
- altered level of consciousness or risk of sedation/seizure
- ingestion of liquid caustic agent
