Chapter 15- World Climates And Natural Regions Flashcards
What are the 3 hot climates?
Equatorial
Hot desert
Savanna
Describe the hot desert climate.
Between 15 and 30 degrees north/south of the equator.
Usually on western side of continents.
Hot, dry days with cold nights.
Vegetation adapts with deep roots, wide spacing, thick bark.
Camels adapt by storing fat in humps, long protective eyelashes, wide hooves for sand.
What is desertification?
The spreading of the desert into land.
Name the 3 causes of desertification.
Drought, population growth, overgrazing.
Name the results of desertification. (3)
More famines, increased migration, overcrowding in cities.
Name 4 solutions to deforestation.
Plant trees/vegetation, new breeds of animals, creating grassland, irrigation schemes.
What are the temperate climate types?
Warm temperate oceanic, cool temperate oceanic.
Describe the Mediterranean climate.
Located 30-40 degrees north/south of the equator.
Summers are dry and hot, winters are mild and moist.
Natural vegetation is evergreen woodland, adapts with thick bark, waxy leaves, long roots, growing wide apart.
Human impact is clearing wood, crops, overgrazing, irrigation schemes, tourism.
What are the cold climates?
Boreal, tundra.
Describe the boreal climate.
Located 55 degrees north to the Arctic circle in the northern hemisphere.
Summers are short and cool, days are long, winters are long, cold, dark. Rainfall is low.
Natural vegetation is coniferous forests (taiga) of pine and spruce.
Trees adapt with shallow roots, thick bark, downward sloping branches, needle like leaves.
Animals adapt with thick fur, camouflage, hibernation (bears).
