Chapter 11- Heating The Earth Flashcards
What is the atmosphere?
It is a mixture of gases around the earth.
How does the atmosphere influence the earth? (5)
- The air we breathe.
- Absorbs heat from the sun.
- Retains heat at night.
- Protects from dangerous solar rays.
- Where the weather forms.
How is the atmosphere heated?
Suns rays heat the earth, the earth then heats the atmosphere around it.
What causes uneven heating of the atmosphere?
Latitude, tilt of the earth.
What is the greenhouse effect?
When the earths atmosphere retains some heat from the sun.
What is global warming?
When more heat is being retained by greenhouse gases and the earth is getting warmer.
Name 5 causes of global warming.
Modern lifestyle, trees, CFCs, waste, fossil fuels.
Name 5 effects of global warming.
Polar ice caps, desertification, spread of tropical diseases, water shortages, more food.
Name 3 possible effects of global warming on Ireland.
Rising temperatures, more rain, sea levels rising.
Name 3 solutions to global warming.
Use more renewable energy.
Reduce deforestation.
Increase energy conservation.
What is wind?
Air moving from high pressure areas to low pressure areas.
What is the global wind pattern?
The general pattern
Of winds on the earths surface.
What is the Coriolanus effect?
Deflects wind to the right of its direction in the northern hemisphere, and left of its direction in the Southern Hemisphere.
What are prevailing winds?
Winds that blow regularly from one direction.
Where do warm currents flow?
From equator towards north/south poles.
