Chapter 15 World Climates And Natural Regions Flashcards
What is a hot climate ?
Hot climate types include Savanna, Hot desert, and Equatorial.
What is a hot desert climate ?
Hot deserts are located roughly between 15’ and 30’ north and south of the equator. And usually on the western side of continents. Conditions are very dry and there is very little rainfall there is long periods of drought.
What are the temperatures in a hot desert climate ?
Temperatures in the daytime are very high and reach 30’C to 50’C.
Temperatures In the nighttime drop to 5’C
What is desertification?
Desertification is turning the land into a desert. It is most likely to happen in dry areas t the edge of the worlds deserts.
Give an example of a hot desert climate.
Australian desert, Sahara desert
What is natural vegetation ?
Natural vegetation is the vegetation that grows naturally in an area without the influence of people. Natural vegetation adapts to different climate types.
What is a natural region?
A Natural region is a region unified by common features such as climate and vegetation.
What are the causes of desertification?
Drought- The Sahel has little or no rainfall. The rainfall is confined to short periods, but it is unreliable.
Population growth- Creates a greater demand for firewood so trees are cut down.
What are the categories that the world climates are divided into?
Hot Climate
Temperate climate
Cold climate
What is a temperate climate ?
The temperate climates include warm temperate and cold temperate ocean. Ireland has a cool temperate ocean climate.
What is a warm temperate climate ?
The warmer temperate oceanic (Mediterranean) climate is located between 30’ and 40’ north and south of the equator nd mostly on the western side of the continent.
Give examples of warm climates ?
Mediterranean Sea, California
What is the weather like in a warm climate?
In summer the temperatures are hot- average of almost 30’.
In summer it is dry
In winter the temperatures are mild - average of almost 10’.
In winter conditions are moist with rainfall
What is a cold climate ?
Cold climates of the world include boreal and tundra climates.
They are located in the northern hemisphere.
What is a boreal climate ?
Boreal climates are located between 55’N and the Arctic circle (66’N)
