Chapter 13 Weather Flashcards
What are the elements of the weather ?
Temperature Sunshine Pressure Precipitation Wind, speed and direction Humidity
How is the information on the weather gathered ?
It’s gathered by satellite and weather stations. It is sent to headquarters of Met Eireann, the Irish national meteorological service in Dublin.
Why is weather important ?
♦️ Families planning day trips to the seaside need to know if there is sunshine and dry weather.

What happens at weather stations ?
The conditions of the atmosphere are measured at weather stations. This is carried out using weather instruments.
What is a Stevenson screen ?
A Stevenson screen is a box with slatted sides that hold thermometers, a hydrometers and and barograph. It is a Woden box painted white to reflect the sun. The sides are slated to allow air to circulate and to keep out direct sunlight.
How is temperature measured ?
Temperature is measured with a maximum and minimum thermometer.
What does the temperature table show ?

How is the average annual temperature calculated ?
Add the average monthly temperature for each month and divide by the number of months (12).
What is annual range?
The annual range is the difference between the average monthly temperature and the lowest average monthly temperature.
What is wind?
Wind is the movement of air from high pressure areas to low-pressure areas
How do you measure the speed and strength of the wind?
The cup anemometer is used to measure the speed of the wind.
The Beaufort scale is used to Measure the strength of the wind.
What are isotachs ?
Isotachs are lines on a map joining places of equal wind speed.
What is precipitation ?
Precipitation is the rain snow and hail that falls on an area.
What is used to measure precipitation?
Are rain gauge is used to measure precipitation.
What is humidity measured by?
