Chapter 15 Haloalkanes Flashcards
What are haloalkanes?
Compounds containing carbon, hydrogen and halogens
How are electrons arranged in haloalkanes?
Electron pair in the carbon-halogen bond is closer to the halogen atom than carbon atom, which the carbon atom has slightly positive charge and halogen has slightly negative charge
What is the mechanism for haloalkanes?
Carbon atom has slightly positive charge and attracts species containing lone pair of electrons (nucleophiles)
What are nucleophiles?
Species that donate a lone pair of electrons
What is the mechanism for haloalkane?
Nucleophilic substitution
What is hydrolysis?
Involving water or an aqueous solution of hydroxide that causes breaking of a bond
What are the reagents and conditions to change haloalkane into alcohols?
Aqueous sodium hydroxide under reflux
