Nuclear Familes
Comprised of two married, opposite-sex parents and their biological children who share the same residence
Traditional Nuclear Family
A nuclear family in which the husband works outside the home for money and the wife works in the home without pay
Family Boundary Ambiguities
Refer to a state in which family members are uncertain about who is in or out of their family or who is performing tasks or roles within the family system

Verticalization of Family Structure
Refers to the increase number of living generations in a family, accompanied by fewer members within each generation
Polygamy
Expands a nuclear family “horizontally” by adding one or more spouses (usually women) to the household
Extended family
Expands the nuclear family “vertically” by adding another generation to the household
Total Fertility Rate
The average number of children that a woman could have within her child-bearing years
Living Apart Together (LAT)
A living arrangement in which each person maintains his or her separate residence, but both people consider themselves to be in a committed, intimate relationship
Child Support
Money Pais by the non-custodial parents for the purpose of supporting the children of a separated marital, cohabiting, or sexual relationship
