Race
A social construct used to distinguish people in terms of one or more physical markers, usually with profound effects on their lives
Scapegoat
A disadvantaged person or category of people whom others blame for their own problems
Ethnic Group
Comprises people whose perceived cultural markers are deemed socially significant
- They differ from one another in terms of languages, religions, customs, etc.
Formation of Racial Identities
Change in social context often leads to change in relations with members of racial groups
-Ex. Europeaans started calling Indigenous people Indians so they started to identify as such
Symbolic Ethnicity
A nostalgic allegiance to the culture of the immigrant generation, or that of the old country, that is not usually incorporated into everyday behaviour
Institutional Racism
Occurs when organizational policies and practices systematically discriminate against people of a certain racial group
Internal Colonialism
Involves one race or ethnic group controlling another in the same country
-It prevents assimilation by segregating the subordinate group in terms of jobs, housing, etc.
Expulsion
The forcible removal of a population from a territory claimed by another population
-Ex. the Beothuk people in Newfoundland
Intersectionality
Refers to the combined effects of class, race, and gender on discrimination and oppression
Conquest
The forcible capture of land and the economic and political domination of its inhabitants
-Ex. Quebec
Split Labour Market
Holds that where low-wage workers of one race and high-wage workers of another race compete for the same jobs, h-w workers are more likely to resent the presence of l-w competitors and conflict is bound to happen and h-w workers may become racist
Transnational Communities
communities whose boundaries extend b/w or among other countries
Pluralism
The retention of racial and ethnic culture combined w/ equal access to basic social resources
Employment Equity
A policy giving preference to minority group members if equally qualified people are available for a position
Critical Race Theory
Holds that racism is often the outcome of common practices that are embedded in Canada’s Political, legal, etc. structures but that many people, especially those in dominant positions, are not aware of
