Intersex
People who do not fit conventional male or female sex categories, biologically
Heteronormativity
The belief that sex is binary, that sex ought to be perfectly aligned with gender, and that sexual relations are appropriate only b/w opposite sexes
Essentialism
A school of thought that views gender differences as a reflection of biological differences b/w women and men
Functionalism
Strengthens the idea of essentialism
-Ignore the historical and cultural variability of gender and sexuality
Social Constructionism and Symbolic Interactionism
Social processes sustain apparently natural or innate features of life, such as gender
Gender socialization
How people choose things or behave a certain way based on their gender or how gender is perceived in society
-Ex. Barbie dolls
Gender segregation
Separating oneself by gender
-Ex. Gr. 4+5s separated themselves by gender
Gender Ideology
A set of interrelated ideas about what constitutes appropriate masculine and feminine roles and behaviours
Glass ceiling
A social barrier that makes it difficult for women to rise to the top level of management
Transexual
Believe they were born with the “wrong” body and identify and live as the other sex
Asexuals
Lack interest in sex
Quid Pro Quo Sexual Harassment
When sexual threats or bribery are made a condition of employment decisions
Hostile Environment Sexual Harassment
Involves sexual jokes, comments, and touching that interferes with work or creates an unfriendly work environment
