Chapter 15 Flashcards
What is a haloalkane?
An alkane in which one or more H-atoms have been replaced by a halogen atom
What is the general formula for Haloalkanes?
CnH2n+1+X
What are the characteristics of haloalkenes?
Very stable, low reactivity, non-flammable, low toxicity, volatile with a wide range of bpts.
What were haloalkanes used for and why are they no longer used for that?
Anaesthetics, refrigerants, degreasers and solvents but the CFC’s added to the erosion of the ozone.
What are haloalkanes used for now?
Organic synthesis and making polymers like PVC and teflon
Are haloalkanes soluble?
ALthough they are polar they are only slightly soluble
How does chain length effect boiling point?
Increasing chain length increases boiling point
