Institutional Review Board
Things researcher must do:
- Provide informed consent
- Ensure confidentiality
- Ensure knowledge that participation is voluntary
- Minimize Harm
- Debrief participants

What happens if you cant give informed consent?

-NO, for example the observation study.
Ensure confidentiality
- Means participants must not be able to be identified
- Data has to be secured
- Confidentiality begins at the study’s beginning
Voluntary Participation
Participants have the right:
- To refuse to participate
- To not be pressured
- To free to withdraw at any time (at any time)
Minimize Harm
The risk of harm must be no greater than in ordinary life.
Debrief participants
Explain what the study was about
Provide time for participants to ask questions
Provide additional sources if participants would like to ask additional questions/counseling
Other Important Issues - Deception
Only used when knowing ahead of time might influence participants’ responses
Deception cannot cause undue stress
Participants must be fully debriefed afterwards

Objetions:
- Violates individual’s right to choose to participate.
- A questionable basis on which to build a discipline.
- Leads to distrust of psychology in the community
Ethical conduct with statistics!
You can do just about anything with your data, but you need to disclose what you do!
Some Other Violations
Fabrication – making up data
Falsification – manipulating physical aspects to get the results you want
Plagiarism – using another person’s ideas, processes, results, or words without giving credit
Ethical standards – disregarding the IRB
Suppressing data – ignoring results because it won’t be “popular”
