Chapter 14 Urinary System Anatomy/Diseases/Treatments Flashcards
Urinary System Main Purpose
Maintain health by filtering blood
Kidneys
pair of soft organs-filters nitrogenous waste from body
Hilium
where renal vein, nerves, and ureter join the kidney
Ureter
Moves fluid from kidney to bladder through process called perstalsis
3 Internal Regions of Kidney
1)Renal Pelvis-collects urine in center 2)Renal Medulla-lies external to pelvis 3) Renal Cortex- outermost
Nephrons
Working subunit of each kidney (renal bowmans capsule and renal tubule)
Bowman’s Capsule
hollow ball at the end of a tube or (nephron)
Glomerulus
coiled capillary (ball) inside of Bowman’s Capsule-blood passes through during filtration
Main purpose of kidneys
Filter blood and process urine into bladder
Urinary Meatus
external opening of urethra
Renal Pelvis
membrane-enclosed basin that collects urine in interior of kidney
Renal Cortex
outer portion of interior of kidney
Renal Medulla
Inner portion of interior of kidney
Renal Corpuscle
composed of Bowman’s capsule and glomerulus
Renal Tubule
long, twisting part of nephron
Ureters
paired, narrow tubes that conduct urine from each kidney to bladder
Urethra
tube that conveys urine from bladder to external
Internal Urethral Sphincter
involuntary muscle-keeps urine from entering urethra while stored in bladder
