The Southern Whigs were betrayed by Zachary Taylor and fell apart. The Northern Whigs voted against the Act, but eventually fell apart due to an attempt to channel anti-Nebraska sentiment. The Republican party formed by gathering up the broken ideals of the previous two parties.
