Define political communication
The means by which political information is produced and disseminated, and the effects of the information flow on the political process.
What is meant by the fourth estate?
It is a term used to describe the political role of journalists
What is the mass media?
Channels of communication that reach a large number of people. Until social media these were tv, radio, websites.
Define social media
Interactive online platforms with designated recipients, which facilitate collective or individual communication for the exchange of user-generated content. Social media bridge mass and personal communication.
What four types of social media are there?
Social networking (Facebook) Media sharing (Youtube) Collaborative sites (Wikipedia) Microblogs/blogs (Twitter)
What is the transmissions model?
A model that interprets any communication consisting of a SENDER sending a MESSAGE through one or more CHANNELS to a RECEIVER with potential EFFECTS
What are self-selection?
The biased choice of media sources made by an individual. E.g. racists go to racists websites and therefore strengthen their standpoint.
What are the four mechanism of media impact?
Reinforcement (Media strengthen existing opinion)
Agenda-setting (Influence what we think and talk about)
Framing (Decide how an event i narrated)
Priming (Influence how we interpret coming events)
What are four broad changes in political communication?
Commercialization of the media, treating users as consumers
Fragmentation, the audience now get their media from many sources (Radio, social media, apps, tv) and not linear tv or daily newspaper
Globalization, Immediate transmission of global events
Interaction, we are now able to interact with anyone at any point. Why listen to politicians?
Define propaganda
Information used to promote a particular political cause or ideology with a view to changing public opinion.
