what are tumors?
when a group of cells grows with no apparent function
what are malignant tumors?
these are cancerous cells; they spread to other cells in the body
what are benign tumors?
non-cancerous cells; do not spread and are harmless
what are metastases?
his is when the cancerous (malignant) tumor sheds cells
and travels throughout the bloodstream and serves as seeds for growth of new cancerous cells.
how do tumors damage the brain?
can damage the brain tissues by either compression or infiltration or both
what are convulsions?
when the muscles move uncontrollably
when does a seizure occur?
seizure occurs when there is a sudden excessive activity of neurons in the brain
do most seizures have convulsions?
no
what causes partial seizures?
clear source of irritation; maybe scar tissue from surgery, developmental abnormality… restricted to small part of the brain
how about generalized seizures?
widespread throughout the brain, sometimes no discovered origin
what are two categories of partial seizures?
simple and complex seizures
what do simple partial seizures do?
can cause a change in consciousness but not a loss in consciousness
what do complex partial seizures do?
these do cause loss of consciousness
what is the most severe form of a seizure?
tonic-clonic seizure , also referred as grand Mal seizure
do tonic-clonic seizures contain convulsions?
