Chapter 11: Part 3 Types of Thirst Flashcards
(8 cards)
what are two types of thirst?
osmometric thirst and volumetric thirst
what is osmometric thirst?
Osmometric thirst is when there is an increase in the concentration of the interstitial fluid. When this happens it draws water out of the cells and they shrink in volume. When you eat a salty meal it is a pure osmometric thirst.
what is osmosis?
—“osmosis” is when there is movement of water through a semipermeable membrane from a low concentration to a high concentration.
what is volumetric thirst?
This occurs when the volume of the blood plasma decreases. When you lose blood you have pure volumetric thirst. Volumetric thirst leads to a salt appetite.
what does the loss of blood, vomiting, and diarrhea cause?
hypovolemia, loss of blood volume
what do cells secrete when the flow of the blood to the kidneys decreases?
renin
what is renin?
A hormone secreted by the kidneys that causes the conversion of angiotensinogen in the blood into angiotensin.
what is angiotensin?
A peptide hormone that constricts blood vessels, causes the retention of sodium and water, and produces thirst and a salt appetite.
