Chapter 14: Nervous System Flashcards
Anatomical components of CNS
brain, brainstem, spinal cord
Anatomical components of PNS
cranial & spinal nerves, ganglia
What does the CNS do?
command center of nervous system, integrates and processes nervous information
What does the PNS do?
project information to and receive information from CNS
Function of somatic sensory
transmits input from skin, fascia, joints and skeletal muscle
Function of visceral sensory
transmits input from viscera
Function of somatic motor
transmits voluntary output to skeletal muscle
Function of autonomic motor
transmits involuntary output to smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands
Five characteristics of neurons
- high metabolic rate
- extreme longevity
- nonmitotic, cannot divide and produce
- excitable
- exhibit conductivity
Function of a neuron
generate and carry electrical signals
What do dendrites do?
receive input and transfer it to the cell body for processing
What does the soma do?
control center; responsible for receiving, integrating, and sending nerve impulses
What does the axon do?
pass signals on to other cells by releasing neurotransmitters
Function of glial cells
protect and help nourish neurons and provide supporting framework for all nervous tissue
Four types of glial cells?
- astrocytes
- microglial cells
- ependymal cells
- oligodendrocytes
