Chapter 14: metals Flashcards
Name 4 properties of metals
- Good electrical conductors
- Good thermal conductors
- High densities, melting and boiling points
- Malleable and ductile
Properties of pure metals
1) Soft
- Atoms are packed regularly in layers
- Easily slide over when force is applied
2) Reactive with air/water
- Wear away/corrode easily
What are alloys?
Mixture of a metal and a few other elements
What are the properties of alloys?
1) Harder and stronger
- Pure copper/zinc vs brass (combi of copper/zinc)
2) Improve appearance
- Pewter, alloy of tin, antomony and copper, is used for ornaments because it looks more beautiful
3) Lower melting points
- Solder (alloy of tin and lead) has lower melting point than most other metals and is used to join electronic parts to circuit boards
4) To make metals more resistant to corrosion
- Cupronickel (alloy of copper and nickel) used for coins
