Chapter 11.1: Acids Flashcards
What is an acid?
Substance producing H+ ions in an aqueous solution
Name organic acids
Tartaric/citric/lactic acid
Name mineral acids
Hydrochloric/sulfuric/nitric acid
Properties of acids
1) Taste sour
2) Turn moist blue litmus paper red
3) Dissolve in water to form solution conducting electricity
4) React with reactive metals to form salt and hydrogen gas
5) React with carbonates and hydrogen carbonates to to form salt, water and CO2
6) React with metal oxides and hydroxides to form salt and water only
7) Dissolve in water and do not dissolve in organic substances
- Organic substances do not dissociate the acid into hydrogen ions
Which metals do acids not react with?
Gold, silver, platinum, copper
Lead only appears not to react
