Q

What four different nutrients should be limited in the average diets of Americans?

A

Added sugars
Saturated and trans fats
Sodium
Alcohol

There are four main nutrients that we need to look at limiting in our diets, as they are considered poor for our health. We should limit our added sugars. These are sugars that are not found naturally in whole foods, and it should be limited to less than 10 percent of daily calories. Once the recommended food groups are met, there is no room for added sugars.

We should limit the unhealthy fats. These are the saturated and trans fats that should be limited, and it should be less than 10 percent of calories per day. When meeting this, it is associated with reductions in the risk for cardiovascular disease.

We should next limit our sodium to less than 2,300 mg per day. This is considered the tolerable upper intake level for people over 14 years of age.

Limiting alcohol is the last recommendation. We need to limit this as it is somewhat considered to be empty calories. The limit is set to one drink per day for women, and two per day for men.

Q

What is MyPlate? How do coaches and clients use it?

A

MyPlate is a tool made by the USDA. It imitates the information within the food pyramid, except it puts it in the form of a plate and how it should be made up. It shows how much of the plate should consist of the five food groups they consider important. These are fruits, grains, veggies, protein, and dairy.
